Animals

Animals have played a huge role in literature throughout history. They appear in poems and stories, and plenty of nonfiction works have been written about animals and humans’ experiences with animals.
Humans have forged strong bonds with animals. Some of our pets are like family members. In fact, Americans spend $41 billion dollars a year on their animal companions. Billions more are donated to wildlife preservation, animal welfare advocacy, and conservation efforts.
Naturally, animals fit comfortably into the stories we tell.

Today’s creative writing prompts pay homage to our animal friends by inspiring a writing session that features animals, either in a positive or negative fashion. Be creative - the animals could be sentient/speaking characters or more passive pets. Due at the end of class on Friday - 500 words.

This prompt is due at the end of Tuesday's class for Mr. Kupiec's Period 9 students.

  1. I recently read a quote by Josh Billings that says “A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself” and after giving it some thought, I couldn’t agree more. My dog has been the fruit of so much happiness in my life over the past year and a half and he has taught me to care so much for something other than just my family or friends. We consider him to be another member of the family and in many ways, he brings us closer together. He is another being that I constantly worry about and care after. When he is sick or hurt, I feel his pain and it honestly upsets me so much to know that he isn’t fine. While I am at school I am preoccupied with thoughts that he is home alone and probably feels lonely or scared, which deeply worries me as well.

There is an indescribable bond that is built between a dog and a human, it is so heart-warming and life changing even. I believe that dogs can genuinely connect with humans and feel many of the emotions and feelings that we do. They react to their environments and are affected by their surroundings just as we are. Dogs can perceive and understand our moods and our different states and also react to them. They are just as loving as they are loveable.

It is such a great feeling to come home after a long day at school and be greeted by subtle barks and kisses from an anxious puppy that has been waiting all day for me to return. When I am sick or upset or something is wrong, my dog notices and responds to that; he’ll lie next to me and rub his head against my arm or chest, it is his way of comforting me and letting me know that he is there for me. When I got my wisdom teeth removed, my mom made it clear to my brothers and everyone else that visited, that I needed rest, needed to be tranquil, and there couldn’t be any loud noises or much commotion going on. Obviously my dog did not understand her words, but he did however perceive the mood and felt change, he could tell that I was not okay and that everything around the house was not as usual. He was not as hyper or as playful as always, he did not run about the house or jump off the couches; instead he was quite calm and never left my side and would even growl if anyone tried to get too close to me while I was sleeping. There was a different look in his eyes when he looked up and I knew it was his genuine concern for me.

After all, a dog is only a part of my busy human life, but to him, I am his entire world; he has no other companions or activities to fill up his thoughts, it is just me (and my brothers and mom... but he loves me the most).

    2. This encapsulates exactly how I feel about my dog. Winter often keeps me company when I am home sick.

  2. Alternative;

Dog- a man’s best friend; or should I say, Animals- humans best friend. Animals, to me, are so special. I have a very special place for animals in my heart. I love animals of all sizes, colors, breeds. I can’t stand the thought of people who torture animals for no reason, I feel like most people who torture animals, have no true reason behind their actions. Most animals are helpless and defenseless, and people that take advantage of that, are cowards. I feel like if people want to torture animals for no reason being, they truly have something wrong going on their head, or some type of self-esteem issue and do that to feel some type of empowerment over something that they know have absolutely no control, and if they feel the need to abuse animals they can get something out of it for themselves. It’s kind of like bullies, when they bully, they will usually do it to the people that they know won’t do anything or are smaller than them, just for the fact that they are cowards and know it will make them feel good about themselves which is really sad for a person to have that type of mentality. Abusers tend to say things like “It attacked me first” which can be true but there but have been a reason for the animals to attack you, maybe you just shouldn’t have been near it, you should know when animals are vicious and when you should get near them or when you shouldn’t. I, for one, love animals but I will not get near one if I think they are going to attack me, I have no desire of doing that, so if it does, I can end up saying something like “it was for self-defense.” In my whole lifetime I’ve only had a few pets. When I was smaller I had fish, birds, and a turtle. Unfortunately they all passed away for no reason being, but even when I was smaller, I grew much attached to the few pets I had. I had them for short periods of time but that shows how much a pet can impact your life, I remember being so upset when they would pass away and bawling my eyes out as a little girl and even at the age, I felt the significance of the animal in such an emotional pet. Today I have a pet dog named Simon, he is a pug. Simon is such a wonderful dog, he loves to play with you and bite your socks off. He is so loving and caring. He’ll wake up always excited and wakes you up by licking your face. Simon has been the family pet for 5 years now and he has become such a big part of the family. A few weeks ago, we had the tragic shock of Simon being hit by a car. It was such a horrible night where he had blood coming from his mouth and him not being able to walk. Fortunately, he is fine now and recovering like a champ. Point being of this, is that animals can become a huge part of your and you should respect just like as if they were humans.

  3. Not many people pay attention to their pets. Most ignore their dog barking in the darkness or their cat climbing on bookshelves. No one bothers listening to their bird squawk or mouse squeak. The human mind chooses to ignore these things and file them as annoying sounds or just random doings. No one understands that when we animals act strange it’s because we feel something strange. When we do something out of the ordinary then it means that something isn’t right. And how would I know so much? Well, simply because I understand my own kind. I’m a simple house cat and have seen a lot of weird things that my owners stay oblivious to.
For example, a few months ago my owners were hosting a get together. There were tons of humans everywhere and I was getting way too much attention. I decided to slip away, not really enjoying the little ones pulling my tail anymore. I pushed into my owners bedroom and hopped up onto the female one’s pillow. Listening in on their party I could hear laughter and loud talking. Above all the commotion something made my ears perk up.
“Oh no she’s back.” I thought as I watched the bedroom door. It slowly creaked opened and in walked the same blonde haired little girl who’s been bothering me for months.
“Kitty!” She yelled while quickly running over to me. She reached a hand out and I braced myself. She pet me and a large chill ran through my body. Everytime she tries to touch me this happens. I then heard the second large screech and knew the rest were on their way. About five more kids rushed into the room like a tidal wave and swarmed by hands.
“Will the torture never end?” I thought while shivering like a cat hyped up on catnip. I kept trying to inch away, but kept getting tugged back into the group.
“Lion.” My female owner called my name and I responded trying inch toward the door again. As she walked up the steps the kids started to scramble around the room trying to find a place to hide. Two of them ran into the closet and the other three laid under the bed. The last one sat on the bed behind me and stared at the door. My owner walked in and smiled at me. “There you are Lion. I was looking for my silly kitty.” I meowed and turned my head on the girl sitting behind me. Her eyes stayed locked on the woman in front of me and my owner didn’t even acknowledge the little one. She picked me up and turned to walk out the room. I looked back in the room and all the others came out of their hiding places. They all started giggling and the blonde haired girl smiled at me. She sent me a little wave and then they started to run out of the room. A whistle sounded throughout the hall and all the children followed it, fading once they got halfway down the hall. My owner looked around the and huffed.
“That’s weird. Maybe the fire alarm needs new batteries.” She said as we descended the stairs. To this day everyone still doesn’t see the kids and no one acknowledges my little hints to where they are playing or hiding. Just as I said before, us animals notice when things aren’t right. It is just that you humans don’t listen to our warnings.

  4. Who am I? I am man’s best friend that’s who I am. My life as a dog is great. My owners love me; I get treated like a king. Especially when my humans eat their food all I have to do is give them one look of my eyes and they fall under my seduction. They call it the puppy eyes, but I call it power. Then I have the power over the humans all I do is walk next to them or lay next to them and I get the best scratching of my life especially behind my ear or on my belly. Other fun things are playing outside in the snow, I love it because it is so soft and there is so much of it, but when I play in it for too long I start to get cold. But probably the best things in the world are toys I love toys and munching on them. Do not get me started with bones they are a dog’s best treat. However with such great power it also brings some down fall. For example humans call it a game when they throw a stick or a ball and then demand me to retrieve it by saying, “fetch”. You know what I call that? I call that them being too lazy to get the stick or ball themselves but I get it anyways. Afterward they throw it back again after I got it back for them. Ugh that kills and then another thing is when I am left alone in the house and I begin to play with the pillows and on their bed because I’m bored I get yelled at. Although sometimes I give them a little present that they have to clean up. Some other things that the humans are bad at is being fast when they take me out on “Walks” they are just too slow so I give them some help by pulling on the leash just a tad bit. The humans also get mad when I want to explore the world and visit the rest of the humans. So then they begin to take precaution and give me a collar with some writing on it. Or sometimes even worse I heard from my friend that there are some humans that put a collar on and if you pass a certain point it shocks you. I am lucky that they have not given me that. But besides those down falls the life of a dog is the best life. We get to play, eat, and sleep all day.

  5. Johnny came home from school one day, threw his backpack on the couch and walked into the kitchen. He opened the fridge and grabbed a water and walked back into the living room and turned on the TV. Johnny sat down and watched for a little while, which eventually out him to sleep.
Johnny woke up and looked at the time and saw that he was only asleep for a half an hour. He stood up and walked up the stairs to go into his room so he could start his homework. When he walked into his room, he saw his dog Max laying on his bed. Max jumped off the bed and started to jump on him.
“I missed you today!” Johnny said as he started to pet Max
“I missed you too!” Max said.
Johnny just stopped and looked at Max with his mouth wide open. He was finally able to get the words out, “You can talk?”
“Of course I can talk. I talk all the time. You know this Johnny.” Max laid down on the floor and looked up at Johnny who still had his mouth wide open.
“I didn’t know you can talk.” Right after Johnny said that, he started to scream for his mom. His mom came running up the stairs into his room. “What’s the matter Johnny?” His mother asked as she was walking into his room.
“Max can talk mom. Go ahead Max, say hi.”
Max just looked up at Johnny’s mom and never said a word. Johnny’s mom started to laugh and she walked out of the room to finish making dinner.
“Why didn’t you say anything Max?” Johnny demanded.
“I can’t Johnny. If they find out I can talk, they will send me away.” Max jumped back onto Johnny’s bed and just laid there. Johnny got up and sat down next to him and promised him he wouldn’t tell anyone.
That night after dinner, Johnny ran up to the room and threw some bread towards Max, “Here you go Max!”
“Thanks Johnny. This bread is my favorite!” Max said as he started to eat the bread. Johnny then ran downstairs and laid on the couch. He was watching TV with his mom and dad, and it eventually put him to sleep.
Johnny woke up and looked outside. It was bright outside. Johnny then looked at the clock and realized it was the same time he woke up yesterday. Johnny ran upstairs and saw Max laying on his bed.
“Hey Max! I missed you.” Johnny said as Max looked up at him. Johnny was confused because Max wouldn’t answer him. “Max. Speak!”
Max just laid there and never said anything. Johnny then sat down in his chair and started his homework. He then realized that Max wasn’t really talking and that it was all just a dream. He sat there at his desk doing his homework and then he began to laugh, “Silly me. Dogs can’t talk!” Then he looked over at Max, who fell asleep and then he finished his homework.

  6. Caleb. So furry and quite large. Usually larger dogs produce fear in others, but Caleb, Caleb only produces joy in whoever meets him. Whoever gets to touch his rich fur and gets to look into his delicate eyes, immediately, feels some sort of connection with him. Caleb is the most obedient dog and obeys all commands. I could swear he understands English! I’m probably exaggerating, but the point is that Caleb is a very important component of our family. He’s the most playful and heartwarming member for sure.
I remember our last apartment was always so nice and clean. As the only child, something was missing. A little sister or brother would have been a great companion, but there’s nothing I wanted more than a furry friend. I would always beg my dad to try to convince Mom. It never seemed to work though; her excuse was always how small our home was, and that I was not old, nevertheless responsible enough to care for one. After some time, I guess my parents felt unsatisfied with the apartment life and began the journey of looking for a house to move into. An actual house! I could not be any happier.
I thought about how awesome it would be to have our house. Barbeques galore and a summer spent in a swimming pool. A yard blanketed with snow, on a cold winter evening. Our very own drive way to draw on with chalk. A play room or wreck room. A bigger kitchen in which we could all bake together. A family room with a chimney. So many things came to mind whenever I day dreamed about my house, but the most important part of my house dreams was the presence of a being that would slowly transition into being my bestfriend. A dog. A fairly, large, golden retriever. I would name him Caleb and teach him all the tricks in the book. He would follow me to breakfast in the morning, and let me guide him to my room at night. It feels so nice to say that my dream eventually came true.
We moved into our house and made it look according to the house of my mother’s dream. There was an empty room and my mom claimed that it would serve as a guest room until the day she had another baby. My father worked daily for a couple months building up a picketed white fence around the house. I started saving up all my coins and allowance for the sake of someday buying a dog house for my future dog. Time flew by and before I knew it, I became comfortable with my house and school. Life was so good and then one night it became perfect. On my birthday night, my parents threw me a little party. I opened up all my gifts and once I was done, my father told me there was one more. He went down stairs to the basement. He came up, and in his arms was a bundle…a bundle of joy. My dream golden retriever, my dream puppy that would one day grow up to be the best dog all, Caleb came running to me.

  7. The dog stared up at me with its tail wagging and tongue panting. I wondered what it could have been thinking. It’s interesting how dogs have such an unlimited capacity for love. They never want anything but to make sure you feel good. I once read something online that said that dogs can sense when you’re upset, and when you are, they come to comfort you. A lot of colleges even have “puppy days,” where volunteers or veterinarians or whoever brings in dogs to the library and they help the students cope with the stress of finals. That would be nice. I hope I get to experience that one day.
But on the other hand, there are those dogs that are trained to be vicious and actually hurt people when commanded. Even then, though, there’s always that one person that they love and can be affectionate towards. I once was crossing the border from Mexico into the United States and one of the officer people had one of those dogs with him. The dog was sitting patiently and almost at attention, but every now and then the officer would look down at the dog and play with him and it was cute. It just goes to show how great dogs are and how much they love people when they’re trained right.
But as great as dogs are, I totally resent the stigma that dictates we choose between them and cats. I love cats too. They’re always so funny and soft and cute. But, there are of course a few that are mean. There are some that are anti-social. There are some that are a little too intrusive. But I love them nonetheless. I don’t know why, but cats always seem to like me. Maybe it’s because I know how to treat them so as to not piss them off, and at the same time, give them the attention they want. For some reason I especially love when you’re sitting on a couch or something and they come over and walk on your legs and curl up on them. Its warm body and the purring sound they make are so therapeutic.
I also think it’s crazy how people even become veterinarians. There are so many animals out there that people domesticate, and they have to learn about all of them. There’s so much that they have to learn about so many different things that are so incredibly different from anything else. I mean, when you study human biology, you can at least apply the knowledge to your own life. But with animal science, there’s no way an animal can tell you if it’s in pain or not. You just have to know. You have to examine and just figure it out. It’s crazy. Veterinarians don’t get nearly enough of the respect that they deserve.
I looked down at the dog during my own introspection. “All that and you’d have no idea what I’d be talking about if I told you any of it.” I said. It just blinked a few times in response, with its tail still wagging and tongue still panting.

  9. “I see fire!”
“Where?, I yelled grabbing her by her shoulders.
“Everywhere! Inside the mountains, burning the trees!” she frantically waved her arms and pulled at her eyes.
“Ulma what else do you see in your vision? It’s okay, I’m right here.” I said, placing her into a wooden chair.
She rocked back and forth, mumbling a language that I couldn’t decipher. Finally it all stopped and she slumped into the chair.
“Ulma?” I shook her gently, but her head just rolled back.
“Please wake up.” I whimpered. The fate of the world was resting on our shoulders and I couldn’t do this on my own. I needed her annoying laugh, her constant questions, and her courage by my side. Ulma is the only one that keeps me going.
    “Amber?”
“Oh Ulma! You’re okay!” I pulled her into my arms.

  10. My best friend; the most loyal companion I’ve ever had.
It’s hard to say exactly when and where we met, but all I can really say is that ever since that day, he has never left my side. He’s the kind of companion that everyone dreams of; he’s loyal, protective, caring and always there when you need him most. It’s hard to believe that almost two whole years have passed since he has been in my life, but it’s even harder to believe that I was once without him.
The impact that a dog can have on a family is amazing, however the impact that a dog can have on an individual is simply breathtaking. Sure, a dog is just an animal. But the moment you invite them to stay in your house, you have invited and welcomed them into your family as well. And from that moment on, the dog becomes a piece of you; a new addition to the family. In most cases, words cannot describe how dogs can make you feel. They become someone to keep you company when you feel alone, a sense of comfort, but most importantly, your best friend.
Dogs can teach you many things, just as you can teach them. Humans teach dogs how to respond to their commands, as well as become house trained, etc. However, the lesson that a dog can teach its human can never be compared to. Caring for a dog is a lot of work, but not only does the responsibility teach you to care for them, but for others as well. A dog teaches you how to love, how to be loyal, and how to be responsible. It’s crazy to think that an animal’s feelings and well-being could mean so much to someone- but the second something happens to them, their owner will act just as if they were a human being.
I know that whenever my dog gets hurt or is sick, I almost instantly feel bad for him, and can feel his pain. Especially when there is nothing I can do to help other than just stay by his side, because of course dogs can’t talk and so I can’t ask him how he feels.. My dog got out of the yard a couple of weeks ago, and wasn’t wearing his collar or any form of id. It was about 11 pm, and my dog is black. We live on a somewhat busy street, which happened to make matters worse (causing me to freak out). It wasn’t like my dog tried to run away, but the gate was knocked down by the wind, and so he just took it as an opportunity to adventure or whatnot. Fortunately, he wandered back within minutes of calling for him, and was happy to see us all looking for him. I guess this kind of shows the loyalty of a dog, in the sense that although he had gotten out of the yard and could have chosen to run away, he came back instead.

  11. Cats rule the world, and if you don’t believe me then your opinion is wrong. Why? I’ll tell you why. Cats are adored by so many people and for what? For doing absolutely nothing, that’s what. All cats have to do is sit there and not attack the kids when they try to pet it and BAM perfect family pet. Dogs have to do all of the work of chasing things and being hyper when you get home and playing fetch with you and stuff. Dogs have to work their asses off to be man’s best friend. Cats just lay there and stare out windows and lay in the sunlight like big furry lumps of nothing and everyone goes “D’aww look at how cute Sir Pounce-A-Lot is!!” It’s silly. Dogs eat a lot, but they kind of deserve it because they run around being hyperactive to try and get the love of their owners. Cats eat just as much, if not more, and for what? Doing absolutely nothing. They blob up and turn into 100 pound monster-felines. Guess what? It’s always hilarious.

  12. If I could take an object that we use every day and create a version of it in the future, it would be all electronics. So televisions, computers, cell phones, etc, are all included. I understand that as time moves on, inventions are modified because as humans evolve, we naturally get lazy, so I will not ruin the trend. I would modify these electronic devices so that you would never have to use a remote, a keyboard or your fingers in general for any of these devices ever again. I would create each device and make it so you do not have to use your hands anymore, just your voice. You could speak to the devices and they could pick up your voice and the command and be able to perform the task that you would like. Life would be even easier than it already is. Eventually I would want to expand this idea to all types of vehicles and your everyday objects like showers, sinks, refrigerators and many more. Doing so would modify how we leave and you would not have to use your hands again. For example, everyone enjoys eating, that is a given. However, if you are eating and watching television, you are going to want to change the channel at some point. You cannot do that if you have food on your fingers because you do not want to get anything on the remote. If you had my invention, you could just speak to the television and it would change the channel for you. The same thing applies to cell phones. All you have to do is speak what you want to type into the phone and BOOM. All of your problems are solved and I am an instant billionaire. Life would be pretty easy if you ask me..

  13. Animals are an important part of many people’s lives. They’re the best friend’s that we tend to forget about. Almost everyone had that one pet that they’ll never forget. The pet they grew up with and the pet that sometime into our teenage years we had to put down.
First there was my dog Honey. She was a boxer, but she was also a runt so she was smaller than most boxers. We got her when I was only a year old. For almost my entire life that dog was there. She’s made me laugh, she’s made me angry and she’s comforted me when I was sad.
We put her down when she was fourteen, which is actually really impressive for a boxer. I remember coming home after school and being the only one home. I knew that when my brothers got home that they were going to be the ones that took the dog to the vet. I had already told them that I wanted nothing to do with it. I didn’t want to see her leave and I didn’t want to see my brothers come home without her. I remember sitting down in the hallway with her before going to my room so I wouldn’t know when my brothers were coming to get her. I remember telling her that I’d miss her and giving her a hug. I remember her sitting there and putting her head on my shoulder; it almost seemed like she understood what was going to happen today. Sometimes a still miss her. She was dumb, and sometimes she smelled bad, but when someone’s there for such a large part if your life, you kind of miss them when they’re gone.
Another pet that was a huge part of my life was my cat Sugar. She was black and white and she was HUGE. When I was in kindergarten I remember my mom telling me on the way home from school that she had a surprise for me, and when I got home there was not only one, but two kittens. The other was all black and we named her Stinky because according to my mom she was a “stinker”. That cat, however, is irrelevant because she ran away and joined the circus, or went to Hollywood. You know, one of those ridiculous things that parents tell their children when a pet dies or runs away. Anyway, Sugar was my cat. She slept in my bed and she would let me do literally anything to her. I used to hold her upside down and she would just dangle there like it was no big deal. She stopped sleeping with me after we got another cat when I was in seventh grade. It was like her way of telling me that she was mad at me, but at the same time, whenever I showed her any affection, she ate it up. Sadly, shortly after we had to put my dog down, we had to put her down as well. She grew some kind of mass on her shoulder that would have cost an unbelievable amount to remove. When I started to become an issue, I mean this thing got to be the size of a softball, we had to put her down. I’ve always been a little upset that my mom put her down without telling me. A warning at least would have been nice.
Pets are friends, and while they may only be around for a part of your life, you’re around for all of theirs. It’s important to remember that their life pretty much revolves around you, so we should cherish them while we have them.

  14. Alternative assignment
I remember my death but now I don’t know where I am. I was standing looking around waiting for my friend. I looked down at my phone and from behind I felt somebody grab my mouth and pull me. I began to scream but it wasn’t worth it all you could hear were muffled noises. Everybody that saw me but didn’t pay attention they all just began to walk faster. I got taken into an alley and I got thrown to the ground. The person stood on top of me and was covered in black with a mask. I cried and yelled for help but nobody was willing to help. I scrambled out and ran out for help. Right when I thought I escaped him I got shot in my back and fell to the ground. I laid there slowly seeing everything I loved going by. I then closed my eyes and I got shot for the last time. Now I’m here in a black space and I don’t know where I am. Am I in hell?
“You are not in hell. You died for a reason: to take care of your sister. She is in danger and you need to help her go in the right path. If you stayed alive then it would have been no chance of her life being saved. I’ve watched you for years and I know that you love her and are willing to give up your life for her. This is the time and if you succeed then you will be able to go back to your old life. If you fail then you will stay here for the rest of eternity.” A voice said.
I looked all over and knew that the voice was telling the truth. I shook my head and in the corner of my ears I heard “close your eyes.” I closed my eyes and in a couple of seconds I opened my eyes and in front of me there was my sister. I reached out to her and I went right through her. I looked at her and she couldn’t see me. It hurt me I took care of her my whole life and now my life has been sacrificed for her. I don’t regret saving her though I would do anything for her safety but I wanted my life back. I had to do what I had to do though.
“Amanda, I will take care of you.” I whispered.
She began to look around and began to call my name. She heard me but can’t see me. I decided to stay quiet I needed her to know that everything would be okay but I don’t want to freak her out. For days I followed her and sometimes I would switch to Mark. I found out that Mark “killed” me and he was planning on raping my sister and killing her. I knew that I had to find the time and place where I needed to tell my sister. Well she worried about me for a little since I was in the hospital in a comma and I was hardly hanging onto my life. Then one day Mark and Amanda planned a date. Amanda put on a tight short red dress with black heels. She curled her hair and did a natural type of makeup. I’ve never seen my sister this pretty in a while. I knew that she loved him. I knew that she wasn’t going to listen to me. This was the night that I would see my sister in the afterlife. I can’t let that happen though I need her to grow up old and have many more memories. My parents also can’t handle so much devastation at one time. I followed them to the restaurant my sister went up to go freshen up. I stayed I called his name and I saw him looking for who called him. I knew this was my time to act.
“Listen, I need you to stay calm right now. You “killed” me. You know who I am. I’m back not to kill you, but to protect my sister. Look across the room that’s a policeman. I can talk to humans and I will say something if you dare to kill her. I know your reason why you killed me and want to kill her. You think she cheated on you. She didn’t cheat on you I promise. I did know that she kissed the guy but she told me that she was going to tell you. Everything was a misunderstanding he told her that he loved her friend. Then she got up ready to leave and he kissed her. She then fell ready to smack him and kissed him. After that they got in a huge fight and she got fired. I never knew that she didn’t tell you. I can tell you something. She is in love with you and you are in love with her. Don’t kill your hands up with more blood. Be wise and love her and forget what happened.” I whispered in his ear.

    1. I saw him look down and wipe his eyes. After they ate he took her home and kissed her and told her that she attacked me but he apologized. She slapped him across the face but he explained why he did it.
“Forgive him. I have.” I whispered.
After they kissed and talked thing out. I ended up in a hospital after a few blinks. I woke up and I saw my parents in the room laying on top of my body. I began to slowly mumble and they woke up and gave me hugs and kisses. It was nice to know that I saved more than one life.

  15. It was the summer after first grade Emily was so excited to be getting a dog. Her mom decided to get a dog for her father’s birthday that was coming up. Emily and he mom visited the place where they were getting their puppy from. Once they walked through the doors there was a baby pool full of puppies there had to be about seven. This litter of labs was adorable, there was four brown, two black and one yellow. Emily was so happy to see all the puppies she ran over to see all of them and she picked one up. It was so small and making little snoring noises because it fell asleep in her arms.
The lady said, “This one’s name is Samson and it is the only yellow lab that is in this litter.”
She told Emily to take good care of this one because he’s special. Emily and her mom had to take the puppy home today since they were surprising her father with the dog that day. They had a little dog crate in the back of the car that had some old t-shirts in it to keep the puppy warm. Emily and her mom weren’t sure if her dad would like the name or if he would want to change it. They really liked the dog. The lady’s house was two hours away and the drive home felt like forever. Emily was so excited to get home to play with the little puppy. The whole ride home he was restless and keep whining, he seemed like he just wanted to get out and run around. He was so full of energy and looked so desperate to play. The car finally came to a stop at Emily’s grandma’s house where her dad was with her brother were. Emily jumped out of the car and told everyone to come out side.
They followed her outside to see what all of the excitement was about.
She said, “Look dad it’s a puppy!”
The little puppy ran over to him and kept jumping up and down in excitement.
She asked her dad what he wanted to name the dog. He simply said, “Lambert.”
Everyone was confused and questioned his name choice but then he explained. He told them that when he was little he was at the vet with his childhood dog (he was no more than seven) when a large dog came out of nowhere and knocked him down a lady came over and called LAMBERT! Come back. The name of the dog forever stuck in his memory and he always wanted to name his dog that.
After hearing the story every agreed that this puppy should be named lambert instead of Samson, it was a great name and was very unique. All of them kept calling the puppy and he seemed to respond to the name and so it just seemed to fit. Lambert was so happy with his new family and ran all over the yard until he tired himself out. He was just the cutest, happiest little yellow lab every. This little puppy now was fit with the perfect name for him with the perfect family for him.

  16. They say a dog is a man’s best friend. I could definitely see how that is true. Ever since I was a young boy I wanted a dog; everyone had them, I wanted at least one. However, my parents weren’t up for all the work that it takes to take care of a dog. They always said that my sister and I were too young so it would come down to them talking care of the dog. They were too busy for that. Finally, my sister and I were both teenagers. We then asked for a dog and still got a no. It was the “allergies” this time. Supposedly they couldn’t handle the fur that dogs shed. It was obvious that they just didn’t want to add a dog to the equation of our family. I didn’t see why they didn’t want one. I understood why we didn’t have one when we were younger, but when I was a teenager I just didn’t get it. What was so wrong about dogs, they were cute loveable companions. There is literally a dog out there for everyone; there are so many different types of dogs that every different person could find one they love. So since my childhood was deprived of owning a dog, once I moved out my house I went to get one. I wanted to make sure that I would have this dog for a very long time. I was on a search for a puppy that I could love for a very long time. I had no particular dog in mind, I was just out looking. When I spotted the grey and white Husky pup I knew he was the one. His beautiful blue piercing eyes is what got me. He was so playful and I just knew he was the one. He was going to be mine and I was going to name him Khodie. I couldn’t wait to take him home and start my life with him. I may not have known him for my whole life time but he was going to know me for his. I wanted to be the best owner I could be. I wanted the relationship that they talked about in books and movies. And that’s what I got. He was not just a dog, he was a family member. The love I had for him was endless. He was truly my companion. Many people grow up, and no longer have time to take care of their animals; they then have to give them up. But it was different with me, through the years I just got more and more attached. I couldn’t even imagine myself giving Khodie up. Even with a growing family and a wife I still managed to keep Khodie around. He was part of the family. Sadly it looked like Khodie’s life was coming to an end. I couldn’t believe it; the truth was that I just didn’t want to believe it. The thought of not being able to call his name and have him come run to be anymore was just something that I couldn’t let sink in. The veterinarians warned me but that still wasn’t enough. No words were able to set me up for the devastation I felt when Khodie departed. Coping with Khodie’s death was something that took me what felt like forever to get over. To this day it is still hard for me to deal with. But I gave Khodie a wonderful life and he made mine just as amazing and that’s all that matters.

  17. Financial Security is Only Worth as Much as the People it Secures (TITLE)

Without him the air thins like an onion peeled perpetually.
The ground I walk upon escapes from beneath me, sinking into an ever-deepening pit of midnight.
Each lonely evening I spend is tacked onto the similarly lonely days—blinding and blunt.
There is never a moment of sunshine as bright or as fresh as it once was.
I now stand with a severe imbalance, unable to provide for my family in the ways that I should—that I am expected to,
For his absence is more destructive than an earthquake of the strongest magnitude,
Leaving my world but shattered—over and over again.

I weep tears for the both of us, though only interiorly.
Far too often I find myself dreaming, of his smile—even his frown.
I would give anything to see it again, to breathe in his air and hold him tenderly,
But the arrangement is far too complex.

    He is gone—forever.

And I must trudge on, a lone soldier with the means—yet not the motive—to reach my destination.
My coat is worn, my heart is weary, and my eyes are forever moistened,
Though my feelings remain the same as the day he departed—
    The day he was declared deceased and therefore no longer fit to be my husband;
My partner in all things life.

But we both live on in separate corners of the world, never to touch again.
While he is forced to discover life without me, I am forced to do the same.
We did it for the kids—the little dears—so that they may live lives without hunger or desperation.
We stood on the edge of heart-wrenching, mindboggling, jaw-dropping debt and we made one decision
To carry us out—to offer a second opportunity with a glowing horizon.
Except the money will never be worth the sacrifice and the sacrifice will never be revoked.
As for the love never to be retrieved, it will float vehemently in the universe until the end of time—untouched.
So as long as the money dispenses itself and the kids are well cared-for, my dear husband lives on to find another life—without me—in a place I am forbidden to go.

Oh Caleb, why did we create this treacherous path?
You are very much alive and yet the certificate disagrees.
Years later, you will walk with pep and glee, another beside you.
And a new set of children will exhume that gleaming smile—the smile that so often left me breathless.
Was the money worth the agony—the jealousy I now feel for your fresh life and our crumbled one?
I suppose I have but one choice, my sweet darling,
And that is to wish you the best of luck in your new future.
At least we have the memories to forever provide us—with tender torture.

  18. Animals are beautiful creations. I always love to admire them. My favorite animals are polar bears. I’m not sure when I began to like them so much, but now I think they’re the cutest. My fantasy is that when I’m older with a good career and lots of money, I will be able to own my own house. In my house, I will have a very large room. Because I’ll have so much money I’ll be able to afford to make it like an indoor ice rink and pool. There will also be plenty amounts of snow and fish in the water. This will be a room for my polar bear. I will get him since he is a baby. I wouldn’t want to separate him from his family so I would wait until there was a polar bear who needed help because his mother couldn’t fend for him. I also wouldn’t want to confine my polar bear to a small space which is why the room has to be very large. Maybe this idea isn’t going to work, so I’ll just adopt one at a zoo or something like that. Currently, I have a dog named Lila. I’ve had Lila for four years now and she was my very first pet. I remember always wanting a pet dog but my mom never went along with it. One time, we went to Shake-a-Paw and I fell in love with a little puppy. I saw the price of the dog and I understood why my mom didn’t want to buy him for me. The closest people to me growing up where my best friends Michelle and Katherine, and my cousin Alejandra. Ale had a dog named Blackie that I had known since I was five years old. Michelle and Katherine also had a dog named Bacon. Because I had grown up around them and their dogs, I was very caring and loving words pets. One day, someone was giving my friends another dog. I remember receiving a call, asking if I wanted the dog because it would be too much work for my friends. Lila is a bichon frise. My friends wanted to keep her but their Labrador was too big and old for Lila who was small and very energetic. Now, four years later, Lila is the best present I have ever received. At first, my mom and step dad weren’t so happy or cared about her, but now they love her more than they love each other (that’s what it seems like). Lila is always the most excited when anyone of us gets home. Although she is five years old, she still acts like a puppy. Every night she sleeps on my bed. Lila is so spoiled by everyone in my family that every single morning my stepdad gives her some of his “arepa”. Whenever the rest of us eat ice cream, Lila also gets her own scoop. She is an irreplaceable part of our family (specifically, she is my daughter) and has definitely always showed me unconditional love. When I have my polar bear I hope Lila will still be here with us so they can also be best friends!

  19. Dear Diary,
Today I just went to a family friend’s kennel and met my new puppy. He was left behind a school when he was only six to eight weeks old. Now he is about 3 months old. He is a white jack russle terrier and he only has a few spots. He does not have any markings on his face which I think makes him unique. Most jack Russle terriers have black and brown markings on their face. This puppy only has a large black spot on his lower back and a small dark spot on his neck. He has a lot of energy and was very excited to meet me. Tonight we will bring him home as a trial, to see how much work it would be to keep him. My mother said that if he makes one peep in the middle of the night, we have to bring him back.
    Dear Diary,
My mother and I realized that we never checked with my dad to see if it was alright if we brought a puppy home. Oops. Oh well, he is nearly part of the family now.
    Dear Diary,
I guess Monty heard what we said, because we are naming and keeping him. We went to the pet store today and picked up a leash, collar, food, treats, and some toys. He is getting a lot of attention from my sister, parents, and neighbors. We brought him down to the nearby park and he definitely enjoyed himself. Everyone was wondering about that little white dog with the black spot. How old is he? What’s his name? How long have you had him? Does he bite? For the latter, he does not bite but he loves to give kisses.
    Dear Diary,
We have had Monty for about two months now and it is late August, 2004. My sister was out on our back deck blowing bubbles when Monty and I came out to join her. Monty was following a couple of the bubbles around but what he did next made us all laugh; he began to pop the bubbles with his mouth. We blew more bubbles and the little puppy went wild. My sister and I, and I think I can speak for our dog, had a blast.
    Dear Diary,
Today the power went out because of a big storm. Monty was not as scared as my sister and I were, but his next fit certainly cheered us up. When the power went out we each grabbed our flashlights so we could finish our homework. As soon as Monty saw the light he went nuts. Running around, spinning in circles and barking up the wall at the small beacon of light. It was a heartwarming experience that brought new entertainment into ours and our dog’s lives.
    Dear Diary,
Monty is about a year old now and his bad habits are starting. He is stealing our socks to chew on, with the hope that he can trade up for a treat. He grabs anything that drops on the floor unless you grab it first. He barks at EVERYTHING and he does not understand the difference between a real animal vs. one on TV. Even animals that he never could have seen before, Hippo’s, tigers, and sea monsters, all make the little puppy go wild. He even is upset by cartoon animals. Sometimes it is fun to watch but we also now have to be careful of what we watch.

  20. A stick breaks underneath my paw but I don’t cringe. The moon’s glow has made it so I can see the woods clearly. Even if there was no moon, my night vision would be superb. I may have given my spot away but I will be able to see any predators coming from a mile away tonight. I’m usually targeted as prey because of my small size but they always underestimate my skill and will to survive. My parents will never understand this side of me. My mom has even asked me to stop changing but I can’t do it. I love how free I feel under the moon and stars. I love how fast I run and how easily I run up trees. My tail keeps me in perfect balance and my fast reflexes never fail me. I walk some more, catching the smell of a mouse. Excitement runs through my veins as I become the predator and begin my hunt. I never eat the mice…I hold onto that part of my humanity. Just because I don’t eat them, doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy the hunt. I run silently, careful not to step on another stick. The thrill courses through my veins and I can’t help but jump a little here and there. The woods end and turn into a fenced in yard. Just as I come up to the fence, I see the mouse’s tail slip underneath the fence. I take a couple steps back and then launch myself to the top. I land almost perfectly. I see the mouse scurrying across the yard, but I immediately recognize the deck. This is my backyard; I can see my 12 year old brother’s toys scattered everywhere. I jump down, landing on my feet, and sit. I clean off my paws and calm my heartbeat. I should have realized I was chasing my brother. No smart mouse would be out and about at this time of night. He’s lucky an owl didn’t get him. I’m watching the house when a shadow forms in the window. It’s my brother; he opens the door and steps out. Behind him flies a hawk and a trotting dog…my parents. I don’t understand how that combination works or even how they got a cat and mouse from it. I don’t change form; “never in public” is the number one rule. My parents enforced these rules, after someone started hunting down our kind. There are a few of us left but none will come out about it. That’s why my parents are so strict, they’re afraid someone will kill me. I have confidence in myself. I know, as a cat, I am full of grace and stealth. Seeing my parents I realize why they are the way they are. My father is loyal and protective. My mother is graceful and always fully aware. It’s going to be great to run with them. I know that’s why they’ve come out tonight; they never change unless it’s to run. This is going to be fun.
