New Take on an Old Story

Choose a story from any time before 1950, and modernize it.  This is the first major assignment of the new marking period.  Your story must be a minimum of 1500 words, and it must be free of errors.  It is due at the end of Friday's class.

  1. Grapes of Wrath futurized

The year was 2098, and there were no such thing as flying cars or holographic technology. Instead, the earth was turned into a barren wasteland after an apocalyptic event. It wasn’t the apocalypse to be exact, but people said it was like the one in the bible. It turned our beautiful, futuristic earth into a barren land that has been deserted by the people. People attempt to make farms with the little resources they have. However, things usually don’t work out for them. The air is too dry and it never rains. There is this location across the country where the land is rich with soil and it rains there. Let us view the story of the Joad family as they journey to across the country.

The only thing futuristic about the time was the weapons. The weapons were almost exactly like the ones you see in the video games. They were dangerous war weapons that made us seem to deserve the fate we received. My name is Tom Joad and I am 17 years old. My father’s name is Mark and he is the head of the family. I also have a sister named Cindy and my mother’s name is Mary. We were your typical family who lived an American lifestyle. Trust me, 2097 was a lot different from 2013. The typical house was a lot bigger than the good-sized ones you saw in 2013. People lived life large in 2097, it was a great year. That was until everything went wrong.

Let me tell you the disaster that happened the first day of January 2098. With our futuristic technology, we were able to predict what was going to happen months before it happened. Our preparation for the events weren’t good enough. Also, natural catastrophes triggered other events. Tsunamis were the first event that happened. They caused massive amounts of flooding. The underwater earthquakes were off the **vector scale**. We used to use the richter scale, but our earthquakes started to break the scale. So we created a new one. Basically, a 10 on the vector scale is a 20 on the richter scale.
