irony

Write a story of 300 words that demonstrates the concept of irony.  It is due at the end of tomorrow's class.

  1. Irony is a stupid idea. It’s one of those abundant things that are only abundant when you already have a story ready to go. When you’ve got a plot and everything ready, irony is like an annoying mosquito that you can never kill and keeps following you around; it’s impossible to avoid. But in certain instances, like being given a prompt that tells you to write a story with irony it, it’s like every friggin mosquito that was just trying to bite you in the ass two minutes ago got killed out by a mosquito plague.
A teacher, one whom I wasn’t a particular fan of, once said that irony is that thing that children do to each other: “We know something you don’t know!” I’ve been playing that over and over in my head for the past thirty minutes and absolutely nothing has come of it. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! I’m actually starting to question what irony even is. Is irony even real? I remember there being about a hundred different instances of irony across all of the Shakespeare stuff we’ve read over the years. The only one I can think of is how Othello thought that Desdemona was being unfaithful but she really wasn’t. Is that even irony? Maybe it’s looking for something that you’ve had with you the whole time? Or is it seeing a mess and making a bigger mess somewhere else to clean up that mess? I honestly couldn’t tell ya, because right now the idea of irony doesn’t exist in my head right now.
I think it was also ironic when Oedipus killed his real dad and mom when the one thing he was determined to do in life was to not do that. That’s irony right? Is there some kind of irony help clinic that I can go to? This is a serious problem that I need to fix before this 20 page story.

  2. Mindy was walking back from the grocery store and she found a pool of blood on the floor. She stepped back and looked around and the blood continued forward. Mindy looked around and saw nobody and slowly walked away. Mindy didn’t want to know what was going to happen to the man but she didn’t want to find out. Mindy began to pace back and forth worried about what have may happened to the person. Finally Mindy decided to take action and went to her neighbors and told them that there was a killer on the loose. One of her neighbors was a policeman and said he was going to take note of it. The other neighbors met up at her house and they decided to have a neighborhood watch. For a whole week everyone took turns on who was going to watch out on the neighborhood. Mindy decided that the following week that she was going to pass by the street she saw blood on. When she passed by, she once again saw a pile of blood on the ground and she screamed because the blood looked fresh. Mindy went running home and hid in her house. She locked all the windows and doors scared if anyone was going to break in. After while she decided that the next day that she was going to take manners in her own hands and take action. Mindy called off of work for the next couple of days and she stacked out where the bush was right next to the scene. In about two days it was near the night time and she heard two people fighting and a big shining light was upon them. She then popped up her head and saw two people fighting. She reached over and grabbed a bat that she brought with her jumped out of the bushes. She began to yell at them to stop fighting. In front of her she saw cameras and lights upon this one scene. The director then told her she had to leave and not say anything because they were shooting a movie in that area and didn’t want anyone to find out and ruin the movie for them. She then questioned them about the pool of blood and they explained to her that it was part of the scene but they had to do it a couple of times because they needed the perfect take. Mindy laughed and went back home and decided to take a nap for the lost hours she had of sleep.

  3. Timothy loved carpentry and always seemed to pour his heart out when working on his projects. This project was his most important of them all though. He delicately put the pieces together and with the most profound patience, sanded the whole surface of it. He perfected his project in the way that he wished to perfect his life—successfully. He worked faithfully on his project with the hope to one day give it to his father. Years ago, Timothy departed from his house after an intense argument he had with his father. Eventually, Timothy felt the need to go elsewhere. At the moment, his heart was full of hatred towards him. As the years passed by, Timothy began to acknowledge the necessity he had within him; he began to realize that he needed his father. His father would probably reject his apology and deny ever missing him. Timothy felt in his heart that his father needed him too though. Every single day, he would practice the words he planned on saying to him. He would thoroughly explain his reasons for which he left, and as best as he could, he would humble himself for the sake of receiving an, “it’s ok. I love you son.”
The grandfather clock was as tall as him, and it was nothing short of grand. It would add an elegant view to what he remembered as a very simple living room. They used to live on their own, after his mother’s death. Timothy remembers he dreaded to enter his house; his father always seemed to be angry. Now Timothy comprehended that it was only product of his grief. He could never forgive himself for abandoning his father he had the strongest form of need for love and comprehension. He genuinely hoped that his father would forgive him, but everything is still unknown. The night Timothy went up to his father, not much was accomplished with regards to an accepted apology, but Timothy’s father accepted his gift—he always wanted a grandfather clock. Upon Timothy’s exit, he heard a loud crash. What was supposed to bring back his father back to his life, had just took his father’s life away. The instance before his death, as Timothy tried to lift the grandfather clock up, his father whispered, “I’ll be ok son.” The whisper, like his life, immediately faded away.

  4. She’s on a mission
She will do anything to get what she’s going for
    He is what she wants
She will try anything to get him
    The attraction is unexplainable
This makes this so much easier for her
    So she thought
She looked at getting him as an easy task
    She was wrong
    He likes the chase
He will keep her waiting for his own enjoyment
Little does she know that he wants her just as much as she wants him
    Even more
She enjoys the challenge of getting him but she wants him already
She can only chase for so long
She will soon run out of breath and it will then be over
    She refuses to lose
And he refuses to give into her
    Someone has to break soon
No matter how hard they try someone is going to break
    She’s in so deep
She has invested so much into getting him
She almost craves him at this point
He feels the same for her but doesn’t show it
For some odd reason that’s what keeps her wanting him
She wants what she can’t have
    No one understands
Why try so hard for something you can’t ever get?
    She doesn’t care
    She will get him
He will give in sooner or later
    And he did
It took time but he did; he gave in
But it’s not like she imagined
    Well at first it was
She felt as if she cracked the hardest code
    She felt accomplished
Having him made her feel amazing
He gave her everything she wanted
    The feeling didn’t last long
    She was over it
She lost all interested and wanted it to just be over
She went out of her way just to get him
But once she got him it wasn’t the same
    How ironic

  5. West Hill High school has the best football team in the whole state. They are unstoppable thanks to their star player Brad Turner. Brad has been the quarter back for the past three years and it is his senior year, but he wouldn’t be anything without his main lineman Josh “Tank” Jones. Tank is huge and can take any guy down. The team has won the Championship they last 3 years in a row thanks to these players. Everyone in the school is aware that Brad is gay and everyone accepts him for it. The only one that ever gives him trouble about it is Tank. Tank and Brad may be team mates on the field but once they are in school or the locker room Brad is treated horribly by Tank. He is so disrespectful and doesn’t accept him for who he is. Tank is the kind of guy that dates every girl in the school and is the biggest flirt. Tank and Brad are total opposites. Brad doesn’t bother with Tank he doesn’t want any trouble. Tank goes out of his way to ruin Brad’s life. Brad is a very friendly guy and there is no reason for Tank to be so mean. The biggest football game of the season was coming up so the team practiced longer than usual. One day after practice Brad was walking back to the locker room when he saw Tank on the phone with someone and he was yelling and screaming then he hung up and was just standing there her was unaware Brad was there.
    Brad, “Is everything okay?”
“Leave me alone this is none of your business.” Tank screamed.
Brad just decided to walk into the locker room; he was only trying to help. Tank walked into the locker room after a couple minutes, he was crying his eyes out. Brad asked again if Tank was okay. This time Tank said no but it’s nothing that you can help me with. After Tank walked away Brad still wanting to help his tormentor went after him. Tank was sitting in the bathroom when Brad walked in.
Brad said, “Please tell me, I want to help.”
Tank, “I’m gay, okay that’s it.”
“So if you were gay all this time why have you been making fun of me”, Brad said.
Tank whispered, “I didn’t want anyone to know the truth about me.”

  6. True Friends
True friends are very hard to come by. They are not just people that you can pick up off of the street. They are people that you invest so much time into and put all your trust into and someone that you care about dearly. They are the ones that you can fight with and not talk to each other at times and then the next time you see each other, everything is back to normal. They are the ones that you can go off to college and then come back home to see them and it is like you never even left. True friends are the ones that you can tell the truth to and are honest with and they can handle it. True friends are the ones who are always there for you no matter what; those are the ones worth living for. My true friends are the guys I grew up with since middle school and even since preschool. They are the guys that I would give up my life for. They are my brothers and my family and I would not trade them for anything. No matter how much we argue or get mad at each other, we are still brothers and nothing will ever change that. There are people that have come and gone in my life and those who I thought were in my life for good but proved me wrong. These guys though, they came into my life and never left.

  7. “Nash! Nashhhhhhh! Hello?” Kelly was aggravated. “Honestly? When did you become such a horrible listener?”
“Huh. Oh! Sorry Kelly, I don’t know what’s going on with me.”
“What’s going on with you? You don’t know? You don’t know what’s going on with you? Anyone can tell you what’s going on with. You’re crazy about this girl, but you don’t even know her.” Kelly responded.
“Who are you even talking about? You’re exaggerating.” Nash rolled his eyes.
“There you go, always so defensive. That’s probably why she doesn’t even know you exist. Because you come of so rude.”
“You really think so?” Nash started contemplating. “I’m not really that defensive, I’m just being honest I guess.”
“Nash, I will simply correct you about something like who said what and you always have to defend yourself as if I was insulting you.”
“Okay, okay.- But, really do you think everyone knows? I mean that I think she’s hot, it’s not like I like her or anything.” Nash tried to save himself but couldn’t contain the curiosity. “Do you think she knows?”
“Oh, she knows, EVERYONE knows.” Kelly laughed at her friend and watched at the unhappy expression her friend made. “But you know what? It’s not a bad thing, we could make it work for you. If you admit to liking her I’ll help you out.”
“Geez, Kelly,” Nash whispered. “Say it any louder why don’t you?”
“Maybe I will!” Kelly taunted, “But are you gonna admit it or no?” Nash rolled his eyes and walked away quickly but her embarrassment was apparent. “Hey, Nash! Wait!”
Throughout the school day Kelly teased Nash about Taylor, the new girl who he was crazy about. Taylor, although she appeared stuck up, was actually very nice. It was obvious that she had been popular in her old school, she dressed according to the fashion and had parked her shiny black car in the best parking every morning after she had arrived. All the guys wanted to get with her, but she had already refused many dates.
“You’re going to have to find a way to come off more- uhm, more, I don’t know how to put this, I’m just telling you this because I’m your friend, you have to act cooler, so that she thinks you’re popular.” Kelly informed Nash, “If only you had at least done baseball like I told you.”
“You already know, I would have conflicting schedules with the play!” Nash defended himself.
“Whatever. Enough of that. Today afterschool we’ll give you a makeover, and teach you how to talk to a girl like Taylor.” Nash didn’t really think it through, as long as it would give him an opportunity with Taylor, he trusted Kelly.
After a week of preparation, Kelly told Nash that he was ready for the final test, to actually go talk with Taylor and then ask her out on a date. “Remember, be a little mean. A little eye contact. Act like you know, Jesse acts.”
“Why aren’t you looking at me?” Taylor asked Nash after a few minutes of conversation. He didn’t know how to answer. “You’re not usually like this, I’ve seen how carefree you are with your friends.”
“Well uhm, I honestly thought this is what you liked.”
“What I liked? You think I’m shallow and just focus on looks? That’s why you changed your look right?” Angrily, Taylor walked away.
Kelly, who was overhearing their conversation couldn’t believe it.
“I’m so sorry, Nash! I hadn’t thought about this. I’m so so sorry. I was just trying to help!” Kelly tried apologizing but Nash ignored her and ran away.

  8. (This is the funeral-off story, temporarily titled: "RIPley Contest"

The scene opens on a handshake. Two young women, one deal—a contest, rather. Thus, with a spoken promise and plan for the impossible, it all begins…
Mere days earlier, I had come across the biggest discovery of my life—the one that would change my lens and perspective, my ambitions and emotions, my view on life itself and that cliché “meaning of life” bullshit.
Around two o’clock in the afternoon, I had arrived at the hospital with muscle fatigue. It seemed like a quick fix-it-up sort of condition and I expected to be out in no time. But nothing is ever quite what you expect. I was then told the very words that no one ever desires to pierce their ears:
“I am sorry to tell you this, Ms. Hatfield, but you tested positive for multiple sclerosis.”
I sat there stunned and, yes, confused. “What is uh—musceros--?”
“—Multiple sclerosis,” finished the doctor. “It is a disease that attacks one’s muscles. Essentially, it slowly removes a person’s ability to move and control them.”
“So that’s the weakness I’m feeling in my arms?” He nodded.
“Now, this sort of condition is provoked by stress. I assume that college is mostly the cause in your case. And in most scenarios, such a condition is capable of being brought to a halt through particular treatment. However, it does not reverse the condition of the disease, nor does it mean that the person will not ignore it. In your case…”
He went on and on about my “particular condition” and how I could take medicine to halt it for a while, but I would need to begin treatment if I wanted to beat this before it beat me. Of course, the “beating” seemed rather futile when the odds he described were one to forty-eight—my odds being the former.
“No, thank you,” I said when he was done. His expression asked me if I had heard his whole spiel correctly.
“Uh, I don’t really recommend refusing treatment. Perhaps you would like to discuss this further with your—“
“—Parents? Do you know what you just told me, Doc? You just said that I have two options: accepting treatment and spending the last couple years of my life in a hospital, miserable and struggling to survive for a little while longer, or refusing treatment and getting the most out of my last couple years. Essentially, to live miserably for a minute longer with the delusional hope of surviving this, or to die with myself and dignity intact?” I recharged my lungs and said, “I think I’ve made my decision. No, thanks.”

  9. Irony. What a funny word. It seems to me that it has become one of those words like “literally” that has lost its meaning to the teenagers who want to seem smart for using it. That’s seriously what it seems like. The definition of irony is something along the lines of using contrary language to indicate a point. But what’s interesting is that the listed synonyms on Google are words like “sarcasm,” or “cynicism,” which really makes you think about how you really use it in the first place. One time, a friend of mine described irony using the following analogy: “Irony is like setting fire to a copy of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.” I mean, I’ve never read the book, but I assume the comparison is relevant. One time I even saw on the internet a certain edition of that book that had that rough substance that you find on a book of matches down the spine, so that kind of reinforces that idea in a way. But another example that makes more sense to me is a picture I came across in my research for this very assignment. It was a picture of a stop sign, but it had graffiti that said “DEFACING SIGNS” underneath it, so the finish product said “STOP DEFACING SIGNS.” The caption remarked that it was ironic because it exemplified that use of contradictory language to get a certain point across, the point being to stop putting graffiti and whatnot on traffic signs, I assume because it can be distracting to someone driving. So that’s what I always think of when someone uses the word “irony,” and I compare it to that picture—because honestly, I’m not sure if I know the actual definition either. If the comparison makes sense with the situation, then it must be ironic. Well, there’s also dramatic irony which is used in literature and is relatively easy to pick out, but that’s a story for another day.
