Write a short story (about two pages) about an animal charging into the library with an announcement.  This animal is your main character.

  1. The soft hum of the library dimmed to a silence as the doors were tossed open. Every head turned to see the visitor, but immediately were thrown into confusion. The guest was not a human, but was actually a small gray parrot.
The parrot waddled in alone and shook out his feathers. The elderly librarian adjusted her glasses to make sure she was seeing things right. A parrot actually was in the library.
The bird had a little red tail and wide, yellow eyes. A young college student peeked up from her book about tropical birds and squeaked in surprise.
“That’s an African Grey! They’re extremely intelligent,” she whispered to her friends at the table, and they all glanced at the bird curiously.
As if on cue, the bird waddled up to the girl’s table and pecked at the table leg to get their attention. They all turned their heads excitedly to see what he wanted.
“You don’t know,” the parrot drawled. “Osiris knows.”
The girls all straightened up in surprise. That was not what they had been expecting. The girl with the book laughed nervously and leaned back towards the bird.
“Is your name Osiris, little bird?” she asked quietly, trying to make sure to not catch the attention of the librarian.
“Osiris knows, Osiris knows!” the bird chirped, a little louder. The librarian shooshed the table angrily.
The girl reached out her hands to try to pick up the African Grey from the ground. In response, the bird let out a screech, causing the whole library to turn their attention to the table.
Nervously, the girl tried to hush the parrot, but it was no use. He was riled up. The bird flapped its wings to reach the tabletop and began waddling across it.
“You don’t know! Osiris knows! Osiris knows!” the parrot squaked, causing everyone to cringe at the loud noise. The librarian started towards the bird, furious.
“YOU DON’T KNOW! OSIRIS KNOWS!” the Grey screamed. A group of people began to chase after him, trying to catch him.
“SILLY BIRDS! SILLY BIRDS!” the parrot squaked at the humans. “OSIRIS KNOWS!”
Finally, the librarian grasped the bird in her wrinkly old fingers and tossed it outside the library doors, scowling as the Grey waddled away, still shouting ominous messages.
A silence conquered the library once more now that the intruder was gone. The students all looked at each other, not quite sure what to make of the strange occurrence. One boy looked up from his book and got the attention of the table of girls who had dealt with the bird.
“You guys do know who Osiris is, right?” he whispered. The girls shook their heads and shrugged.
“Osiris is the Egyptian god of the Underworld,” he said, an uneasy expression on his face. “I think the bird was trying to warn us.”
Just then, an emergency alert beeped on every phone in the library, causing yet another stir of noise. The librarian shooshed angrily.
“Oh my god…,” one girl gasped, covering her mouth. Everyone stared at her with scared eyes.
“A nuclear missile is en route to New York City. We’re going to die,” she screamed.
